I. Description of Problem or Issue

Our issue is school safety and it is important because of past violence issues in schools. This topic is something that parents, students, and our community will always care about. The idea of safety and security is a basic instinct that all humans need to thrive in life. Current efforts are being made by schools to increase security, add metal detectors, and impliment zero tolerance policies in schools.

II. Research Summary

Sarah Mentzer
My research for the project was to examine current school safety standards used in schools. The main standard used is the Zero Tolerance Policy. Overall 94% of the schools in the United States have a zero tolerance policy for firearms, and other weapons. These zero tolerance policies are administrative rules intended to address specific problems with schools safety and discipline. In 1994 Congress passed the Gun-Free School Act, which required states to legislate zero tolerance laws or risk losing federal funding. There has been controversy that the zero tolerance policy is creating more harm than good because of its inflexibility in certain situations, some parents and teachers feel that students are be unfairly punished for certain actions.

For this project I was to examine police and their roles in high schools. I was also told to examine the teachers roles during violent situations. I found that by having police in the school it doesnt just make it much safer, it makes students aware of how serious situations could get, from violent crimes to minor fights, everything will get reported to school officials and the police officer in your school. I had a police officer in my school and there was less crimes, fights, and threats during my four years of being there. Other schools have faced more serious problems with violence which is why a officer should always have their own space in the school. Also by looking at the school's community and background it helps the officers and the school officials no what is going around in the community and if they should be aware of anything that is happening. In one of my articles by Craig D. Uchida, Shellie Solomon, Charles M. Katz, and Cynthia E. Pappas, they stated “Police indicated that certain partnerships were instrumental in developing a better understanding of problems in and around schools.”(School Based Partnership). Overall police help better the risk of threat, fights and crimes in schools to make students feel more comfortable and safe.

My question to research is how you can prevent bullying in schools. I learned a lot of facts and statistics such as 29% of schools reported having more difficulty with student bullying than with any other single discipline problem! I learned the most popular ways that schools prevent bullying and violence in the schools. I also read articles on how the government and officials feel are the best ways to prevent bullying in the schools. I read about the most severe cases of violence such as Columbine, and the Virginia Tech shooting. A few of the articles focused on how important it is to understand that if we had done something before the event occurred, it would have been much less likely to occur at all in the first place. I also researched what is behind the bullies mind, and found a study that found that when young people plan targeted violence they often tell at least one person about their plans, give out specifics before the event takes place, and obtain weapons they need. Overall I learned a whole lot about the different techniques schools use to prevent violence and bullying in schools.

My question on school safety was what to focus on the standard discipline methods in schools. The problem with discipline is that there is not enough of it. Parents and teachers both feel that discipline is hard to control and to teach to the students. Many parents feel that their children are not being disciplined in schools and it is causing their learning abilities to decrease. Safety in schools is one of the biggest concerns and in order to keep a school safe people around the school and students in the school need to stay disciplined and be able to trust one another. Discipline varies from person to person and is actually harsher on disabled students. Students with disabilities receive harsher punishments than a student without disabilities. The No child left behind act is working on concentrating on all students learning at the same level and no one is confused or having trouble. Parents would like to see more focus on discipline not getting left behind either. Discipline and testing are two important factors that tie into one another because when a standardized test is given, discipline is also being tested by having the students quiet. Discipline can be improved in many ways and it is up to the teachers to start caring more and working harder so the students can succeed.

II. Group Product Overview

Our group is planning to do a powerpoint presentation highlighting our research on school safety. After the presentation we will do a few review questions with prizes to make sure the class followed our information.
